Zo’n 1.100 speelgoedfabrikanten uit een kleine
90 landen verzamelen zich deze dagen in New York voor de 106de editie van de American International Toy Fair, ‘s werelds grootste speelgoedbeurs. Gisteren reikte de Toy Industry Association daar de TOTY (Toy of the Year) Awards uit.
Als beste speelgoed werd ‘Bakugan Battle Brawlers Battle Pack Series 1 Spheres’ van Spin Master gekozen. Da’s andere koek dan ons eigen Speelgoed van het Jaar, hè? Het gaat om een spel rond de Bakugan Battle Brawlers, een Japanse animatieserie op Cartoon Network.
Dit zijn de winnaars in specifieke categorieën:
- Activity Toy of the Year: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Crayola LLC).
- Boy Toy of the Year: Bakugan Battle Brawlers Battle Pack Series 1 Spheres (Spin Master).
- Educational Toy of the Year: LeapFrog TAG Reading System (LeapFrog).
- Girl Toy of the Year: Playmobil Horse Farm (Playmobil).
- Electronic Entertainment Toy of the Year: FurReal Friends Biscuit My Lovin’ Pup (Hasbro).
- Game of the Year: Bananagrams (Bananagrams).
- Infant/Preschool Toy of the Year: Elmo Live (Fisher-Price).
- Most Innovative Toy of the Year: Air Hogs Zero Gravity Micro (Spin Master).
- Property of the Year: Bakugan Battle Brawlers (Cartoon Network).
- Outdoor Toy of the Year: Crayola 3D Sidewalk Chalk (Crayola).
- Specialty Toy of the Year: Create Your Own Pop-Up Books (Creativity for Kids/Faber-Castell).
Zitten leuke dingen bij (check ook nog even de nominaties). Dan weet je wat we over een tijdje hier kunnen verwachten…

Omdat niet alles in de winkels geweldig is, heeft de Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood een TOADY (Toys Oppressive And Destructive to Young Children) Award in het leven geroepen. De Barbie Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Doll (Mattel) is volgens de CCFC-leden het slechtste speelgoed: "It embodies a host of harmful expectations about what girls are supposed to be like."
