"It’s important to know your status by getting tested because HIV/AIDS is taking a lot of lives in our community and around the world. Your lyrics can really have an affect on people’s lives and I’ve seen it happen." [Common]

Als ik je vraag hoe je jongeren aanzet om zich op HIV te laten testen, denk je vast niet meteen aan een wedstrijd. Anderen (in de VS) wel. Uit de ruim 2.400 ingezonden teksten in de ‘A Minute lyrics contest’, werd die van de 18-jarige Jose Rivera als winnaar gekozen en gerapt door Common.

De wedstrijd is een initiatief van hiphopper/acteur Common en zijn Common Ground Foundation, in samenwerking met de Kaiser Family Foundation, MTV en Youth Speaks, als onderdeel van de ‘It’s Your (Sex) Life’-campagne. En die campagne draait dan weer binnen Think.MTV.com, een online community waar jongeren met hun vrienden en artiesten samenkomen om positieve sociale veranderingen te bewerkstelligen. Ik zou natuurlijk de achterliggende ideeën van de A Minute-wedstrijd uitgebreid kunnen vertalen, maar volgens mij zeggen devolgende quotes genoeg:
